Hello fellow book nerds!
I am so excited for this Recommendation Monday because it’s a series that is so close to my heart. In case you didn’t know I am OBSESSED with the Shadowhunter world Cassandra Clare has created. It really brought me back into reading and there are so many amazing things about it.
This is a fantasy series I recommend to so many people but there is one issue – it is a big world. With 3 full series totaling in 12 books, 4 companion novels, and a new series starting (released tomorrow), where does one begin?
Well, that is what this post is going to concentrate on. While I highly recommend this series there are MANY ways you can read it. I will recommend my personal favorite way to read this series to avoid spoilers and really enjoy the way Cassie has connected her worlds.
I will NOT be including Chain of Gold since it is releasing tomorrow and not a finished series yet. Companion novels are included in this list but they are not necessary to read the main series.
This past year I hosted a year long readathon of all of the books following the hashtag #READShadowhunter. I honestly enjoyed this so much that I plan on doing this again. If you are interested in diving into this series but would like someone to guide you through it, please consider joining me in June! I have a discord channel already set up (join here) or feel free to send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I can provide you more detail.
So what order do I prefer to read the Shadowhunter books in? Personally, I read them in chronological order. I do this for 2 reasons.
- This is how I entered the world – Clockwork Angel was the first book I read and I fell in love. I was lucky to enter this world when The Mortal Instruments were just finished because I flew through the rest of the series. Once I started I couldn’t stop.
- Chronologically it makes sense – Cassie’s world is so connected that if you don’t start off with The Infernal Devices, you miss a lot of subtle references in The Mortal Instruments. It was so much fun reading TMI and seeing those things from TID.
Here is my suggested reading order
The Infernal Devices
The Mortal Instruments
City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
City of Fallen Angels
City of Lost Souls
City of Heavenly Fire
The Bane Chronicles
I prefer to do this book after The Mortal Instruments because in City of Heavenly Fire this is the book that Magnus writes for Alec. If you need to break up The Mortal Instruments, you can read this after City of Glass.
The Red Scrolls of Magic
Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy
Red Scrolls and Shadowhunter Academy should definitely be done after TMI and before TDA.
The Dark Artifices
