The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black – Book Review : #Blogmas2021 Day 4

Hello fellow book nerds!

I finally sat down and read The Queen of Nothing after waiting so long to finish this series.

How did you like it?

Please note that if you did not read The Cruel Prince or The Wicked King there will be spoilers. The review for Queen of Nothing is spoiler free itself, as always.

You can see my reviews for the first two books here:

Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold onto. Jude learned this lesson when she released her control over the wicked king, Cardan, in exchange for immeasurable power.

Now as the exiled mortal Queen of Faerie, Jude is powerless and left reeling from Cardan’s betrayal. She bides her time determined to reclaim everything he took from her. Opportunity arrives in the form of her deceptive twin sister, Taryn, whose mortal life is in peril.

Jude must risk venturing back into the treacherous Faerie Court, and confront her lingering feelings for Cardan, if she wishes to save her sister. But Elfhame is not as she left it. War is brewing. As Jude slips deep within enemy lines she becomes ensnared in the conflict’s bloody politics.

And, when a dormant yet powerful curse is unleashed, panic spreads throughout the land, forcing her to choose between her ambition and her humanity…

This review is kind of hard for me to write. I really enjoyed the story overall but it felt a little bit underwhelming? I felt like this book missed a lot of what the first two books had. I kind of wish that the beginning of book was smaller, and there was more to the end. It’s hard to write about what really felt underwhelming without spoiling but there was just no action. Like, none. All of this build up from the first two books, and it just ended? I really felt disappointed. When looking at the book at a whole, it was good and definitely had a good ending but it just didn’t live up to my expectations. And they weren’t as high as maybe most but compared to the first two books, this was definitely not a solid third.

Jude was still Jude and I lover her for it. I love that her character hasn’t changed as much even though she grew a lot. I’m so glad that Taryn has some redemption. She was probably my favorite part of the book. Cardan was disappointing as well. All of this bravado he puts on and the way he teased Jude in the previous book was gone. He was like this sappy fae boy and it just didn’t feel right. I mean, I knew he was that way all the way down but the way his character just flipped didn’t really do much for me.

Final Thoughts

Overall, The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black was good overall but also lacking in some parts. I wish there was more to the book instead of feeling so flat. There was so much depth in the first two books and this one felt lacking. The ending felt so rushed and I just felt disappointed this was the end, and not just because it was the end of the story. I still love Jude and she was exactly what I expected from her in this final book. I’m also so glad that Taryn was able to be more apart of this book. Cardan’s character just didn’t really fit in though. One of the best things about this book was the tension between Jude and Cardan. But he wasn’t in the book until almost halfway through and his character just wasn’t the same… and I didn’t really like the changes. If you enjoyed the first two then you will enjoy this ending but I wouldn’t expect the same dynamic that the first two books delivered.
