Summary

Taken from Goodreads

I just saved the boy I’m falling for from a gruesome death by a demon. And what does he have to say? I’m the key to opening the gates of Hell. I mean, a thank-you would’ve been nice. Or another scorching-hot, forbidden kiss. Either way, destiny will have to find someone else to torment, because I’m so done.

Or I was, until my little sister starts cackling exorcist-style and stares at me with eyes that aren’t hers. They’re Marid’s, the Greater Demon I just kicked back to the dark realm he came from. Possessing Ray whenever he wants is his ultimate revenge.

The only way to break the tether between them includes a road trip through Hell, aka the Ather. I quickly discover nothing is as it seems in this place. Yeah, there are realms of terror, greed, and desire, but there’s also peace, and a beauty I never knew existed…and it’s eerily familiar.

With each obstacle we encounter, I slip a little further into the chaotic energy of my growing dark powers. And when an unexpected betrayal hits me square in the chest, I freefall into them.

Fate painted me as the monster of nightmares, and after this? Destiny is about to learn just how monstrous I can be.

Feedback

Oh I liked this book so much better. While the first one was definitely a set up on the characters, this book really dived into the plot. With finally knowing who Harley is, well kind of knowing who she is, their adventure isn’t quite over yet. Ray is still being possessed by Marid and the only way to stop this is to go to the Ather and severe the connection. And Ather is what Hell is based off of. I really enjoyed this book and the different areas of the Ather. It was descriptive and fun and so much more story than the first book. There were still a lot of pop culture references but luckily they slowed down a lot. However, the pace was a lot faster and I felt like the story was finally becoming unique.

Along with a better story, I really liked Harley a lot more. It was a lot less of repetition with her and more of discovering who she is and really believing in herself. A lot more steamy moments with Draven and a lot more character growth. But that’s not only Harley – there was more Kazuki, Cassiel and Ray which played a bigger part. More characters were introduced and I really liked them as well. I’m excited to see where this third book is going to go because Mama Bear Harley is definitely coming for the bad guys.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Shadow of Light by Molly E Lee was a huge improvement. I enjoyed this book a lot more as I felt like there was more of a plot and story. The first book repeated itself a lot and this was dived more into the paranormal world. There is more character growth and I found myself enjoying Harley a lot more in this book. Beware of the pop culture references, but they are steadily dying down. If you enjoyed the first book, or even semi-liked it, then I highly recommend continuing and I can’t wait to pick up the final book.
