Summary

Taken from Goodreads

They tell me the country looked different back then.

They talk of open borders and flowing rivers.

They say the world was green.

But drought swept across the globe and the United States of the past disappeared under a burning sky.

Enora Byrnes lives in the aftermath, a barren world where water has become the global currency. In a life dominated by duty to family and community, Enora is offered a role within an entity that controls everything from water credits to borders. But it becomes clear that not all is as it seems. From the wasted confines of her small town to the bowels of a hidden city, Enora will uncover buried secrets that hide an unthinkable reality.

As truth reveals the brutal face of what she has become, she must ask herself: how far will she go to retain her humanity?

Feedback

I was honestly impressed with this novel. When I first dived in I thought that this might be another Divergent novel, which isn’t bad – I absolutely love the first book. Sometimes it’s hard with dystopias to have a very unique voice but as this story went on, Ward found that unique story. The one thing I liked about this novel was how it started off. There was a lot of information given in the beginning but it never felt dull, just necessary. The prologue provided the events that led up to the present day in the story but also how things worked. It was not too much information but just enough. What I thought made this story unique was how Enora actually liked her government. In a bunch of dystopian novels, the main character doesn’t like the way the government is handling events so they either find a way to break in and spy or start a revolution. This story took a twist on that and really made it special. Enora thought that the DMC was doing everything completely necessary to handle the situation of the world and agreed with most of the things they did. However, as the story progressed and she started to learn how the DMC really operated, her opinions changes. Ward did this very cleverly as my opinion changed with Enora’s. The novel held a great pace and kept me interested the entire time and was honestly so well written.

Enora was an interesting character. Like I said earlier – it was interesting to see her perspective change and made her feel more realistic. This sense of trusting the DMC should be natural and to Enora in the beginning, it was. I like how she always kept her mind open and when something didn’t seem right, she didn’t just accept it. Even though Springer kept information from her, it was the perfect set up for a sequel. The intensity that Enora experienced really bled through the pages and I loved how she wouldn’t give up until she knew the whole truth, even if it was ugly.

Final Thoughts

Overall, After the Green Withered by Kristin Ward is a great dystopian novel. While some aspects are very similar to other dystopias, Ward did take a unique approach. I really enjoyed how Enora started out believing in her government but as events fold, they make her start to question. Enora was also a strong character and I really enjoyed her development. This is a series I will definitely be continuing and I highly recommend for those who are looking for a good twist in a dytopia world.

“We want to meet. It is time for you to learn the truth.”
