Releasing September 1, 2022

Summary

When sixteen-year-old Lilly arrives in Castello, she isn’t impressed.
A secluded town in the Italian mountains is not where she saw her last years of high school playing out.

Divided for generations by a brutal clan-family war, the two halves of Castello are kept from destroying each other by the mysterious General, a leader determined to maintain order and ‘purity’. . . whatever the cost.

Lilly falls in with the rebellious Liza, brooding Nico and sensitive Christian, and sparks begin to fly. But in a city where love can lead to ruin, Lilly isn’t sure she can trust anyone — not even herself.

And then she accidentally breaks Castello’s most important rule: when the General’s men come to test your blood, you’d better not be anything more than human…

On the drive up from Rome, the whole road was covered in mist. A good thing, probably: it prevented me from commenting on the scenery. Italy was supposed to be beautiful , but I had a lot of faith in my ability to be unimpressed. Rolling hills and ancient cities make good vacation spots, sure. But living there, being forced to stay – that’s another story. Whatever charm the country had, I knew it wasn’t going to work on me. At least in the mist I could pretend I was somewhere else. Preferably at home.

We had left Maine yesterday morning just before sunrise, and I’d frozen up on the way out the door, staring at the rambling yard and broken porch steps and thinking, This is the last time. I’d lived in the same place all my life, and it wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t even good, but at least it was familiar. My father put our house on the market as soon as he got the new job, and in a week the only home I’d ever known was sold. I considered leaving a note for the new owners, something to make them feel welcome.

To whom it may concern, My mother killed herself in the living room. She tried to burn the place down right before. Enjoy!

In the end, though, I decided it wasn’t worth it. I was afraid Jack would find out, and then I’d have to spend the whole plane ride shrinking from his disappointment. I was ten when my mother died, but I tried to keep my memories of her carefully blurred. Like faded Polaroids: too murky to hurt me.

‘So are we lost yet?’ I ventured, staring towards the non-existent Italian landscape in the mist. ‘Or is this supposed to be normal?’

We’d left the highway for a back road, and the GPS on the dashboard had cut to black. No signal. I could see grey shapes looming outside the car – a thick tangle of forest. In the fog, it was claustrophobic, almost eerie. The GPS wouldn’t refresh no matter how many times I tapped it. My phone had lost reception ages ago.

‘It’s normal,’ my father said. ‘Castello’s in a dead zone. The mountains interfere with the service.’

Castello. That was the place we were moving to. Not Rome, with its museums and boulevards. Not Florence. Castello.

It was somewhere in the middle of Italy, a tiny speck on Google Maps that didn’t load properly when you searched it. The most I could tell was that there were woods around the city, and more woods around those woods. Also, apparently, mountains. On satellite view: a blurry shot of rooftops looming above the treeline. The image had dissolved into pixels when I’d tried to zoom in. Like the town was so unimportant that the rest of the world had forgotten it was even there. Which was why we were moving in the first place – so my father could help Castello modernize.
