Inheriting Her Ghosts

S.H. Cooper

Summary

Taken from Goodreads

Inheritance often comes with strings attached, but rarely are they as tangled as those hanging over High Hearth.

When Eudora Fellowes learns she’s the sole heir of her estranged great-aunt’s seaside manor, she believes it will be the peaceful escape she’s longed for. What awaits, however, is a dark legacy shrouded in half a century of secrets, and it doesn’t take long before Eudora realizes she’s not the only one to call High Hearth home.

First Impressions

As I write this, I am currently 35% into the book and I am hooked. This is a short read and I can’t wait to see how the rest of it goes. It starts off with news that Eudora is to inherit her great-aunt’s seaside manor of which she has little memories of. However, with the loss of her own parents and with no intention of marrying, kids, or being a “normal” member of society, Eudora decides to take the house and escape. Eudora does not travel alone but instead with her two obedient and dedicated wolf hounds, with whom I am obsessed with. It doesn’t take long for weird things to start happening and Eudora to start questioning what is happening with the house.

And this is practically where I am at. As I stated this isn’t a long book but within the few pages I have already read, it seems like Cooper made a lot of decisions. The first giving us a little background of Eudora and her personality. Within a few pages, it’s easy to understand Eudora and like her a whole lot. Usually, the “strong female” characters of the earlier years come off more annoying and pretentious than likable and relatable. I don’t know if it’s Eudora’s attachment to her dogs but I really like her character. She never comes off as rude or judgmental of those who do conform to their society but rather just authentic to who she is and how she feels. I am also way obsessed with Black Shuck and Cerberus. There is something about having dogs while dealing with the supernatural that makes it that much creepier. And Cooper’s decision to have Eudora live alone except with these two hounds – wise decision. It adds to that fear of what is really out there?

So safe to say that I am absolutely going to be continuing this book and hopefully if you haven’t picked it up yet – you will as well! I think this book has a great beginning and strong writing to bring the reader in. Cooper has done an amazing job and making a character who is different from that time without it being annoying. And the addition of the dogs for this supernatural journey just emphasizes the terrors of what is going on.
